Small towns seem to be the new breeding ground for hip-hop artists to emerge. Hailing from Milwaukee, Jon Briggz is another testament to that. While his jazzy LP, Still Lost, was released in April, the rhymer has been releasing steady music since then, including the track “Serious” last week.
Although his new music seems to take an unfortunate departure from sounds of his tape with more trap and less backpack there’s still a few gems in there.
One, “Right Now” by Briggz and Charlie Brigante is meant to be a theme song for the Wisconsin NBA team, Milwaukee Bucks. It could easily be a rallying anthem to rile up a crowd. With similar sounds as B.o.B’s “I Bet I Buss” featuring T.I. it’s clearly a banger. Other songs like “Serious” don’t work as well. Lines like “You can’t tell me I’m a wrap n—-, it’s a rap n—–,” are somewhat unimaginative and others are just too distasteful to quote.
Outside of these tracks, Briggz, who leads the group We R The Lost, has a pretty enjoyable discography. As mentioned before, his LP, Still Lost, is pretty okay outside of a few ignorant and contradictory rhymes.
For example, in “The Times” he throws in snippets from Martin Luther King Jr and Malcolm X speeches as he raps about the ills of racism and says “f— the police.” But in “Serious,” he talks about shooting down others like so.
Other lines border the line between okay and wack like: “This s— still get ill, tell em how you feel / I say I got the juice, they probably give that s— to steal / I’ma keep my lips sealed / But they gon’ be scarred for life / lyin’ did not get the job done tonight,” as he raps in “X.”
