Standing Ovation or SO might not be great but he is good. The rhymer dropped his 4-track EP, Echo Park, back in March but, the sounds still reign in as very fresh. Not that it’s groundbreaking but it’s certainly a break from the pace and sound from the hip-hop landscape.
Reminiscent of the Odd Future crew, specially Tyler the Creator and Earl Sweatshirt, SO experiments with soundscapes in his songs. On top of the psychedelic sounds, he brings in high pitched catchy choruses to match with his short but poignant verses. Overall it gets a groovy feel that could even be thrown under an alternative rock genre along with alternative hip-hop.
The rhymer proves he can slow it down too. In the last track of his EP, “Stoopid,” the song falls into a slow groove as he spits high pitched verses.
