Andi Mack premiered on the Disney Channel April 7, 2107, and centers around a girl named Andi, who is about to celebrate her 13th birthday. When her capricious older sister Bex returns home with the hope of getting her life together, Andi’s life is turned upside down and she is left questioning everything she’s ever known.
Joshua Rush plays Cyrus, one of Andi’s two best friends. Cyrus is quirky, not athletic and a little bit awkward, but he has a sense of humor that can make just about anyone laugh!
What did your parents say when you told them you wanted to be an actor?
My parents were really the ones who got me into it! My mom noticed I loved to be in front of the camera so they got me started with modeling in Houston, where I was born. Eventually, we moved to Los Angeles and it really started taking off.
How did you land your first role?
I landed my first role in Los Angeles, and it was for Private Practice! I had two lines: “I made butter!” and “Ow.”
How do you balance your career and studies?
I go to an online school which helps a lot. Even when I didn’t, my mantra has always been “school first, work second, everything else third.” School and learning is the best way to ensure a successful future.
What keeps you humble?
My parents always keep me humble. They make sure that I never let things to go my head and they keep me grounded. My friends help too. I have my little friend group of people who I know love me for who I am, not what I do or how many followers I have.
With an already prolific resume, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Hopefully starting my first year at an Ivy League college! Like I said, school is really important to me. I have political aspirations, so to go to an Ivy League school like Yale, or a top political science school like Georgetown is a dream of mine!
What is one of your favorite memories from the set of Andi Mack?
I loved how we all got obsessed with arm wrestling! Asher and Sofia were champions and I never even won a single match!
Who would you love to work with and why?
I would love to work with a really prolific action movie star like Tom Cruise! I know I’m probably supposed to like fancy cinematic movies, but I love action movies with crazy stuff happening all the time!
Why is ‘Apple’ your favorite product?
I think the iPhone 7 Plus is a marvel. I take a lot of pictures on my phone — I have the 256GB model — and I love it! Right now I have 7,000 images on my phone and tons of them are taken with the amazing portrait mode!
What is your animal spirit?
My spirit animal is a bear cub! My mom has called me “Joshie Bears” since I was a baby, so I have to go with that one!
Joshua proves himself to be wise beyond his years by the projects he has chosen in his career. At such a young age, his resume already includes several film festival projects and big budget films. His starring role in “Parental Guidance” alongside Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei stole the holiday season in 2012.
He also starred in “Break Point” alongside Jeremy Sisto and David Walton, “Sex, Death & Bowling” with Adrian Grenier, the independent film “Saving Lincoln” and the horror film “Emelie”.
