JAB Jewelry Designs is a family owned store that was established in 1989 and within that time they quickly earned and maintained a reputation for producing quality jewelry with an impeccable integrity. Most stores disappear when their manufacturer is no longer a necessity when it comes to distribution, but JAB Jewelry evolved with the times by incorporating their old-world craftsmanship techniques with the latest state-of-the-art technology equipment.
So how do they bring the pieces to life for their overflowing clientele? What makes their retail stand out from all the others? Well, these are just some of the many questions I asked owner Joe Bonasso of JAB Jewelry Designs in this Q & A.
Why should consumers consider supporting smaller retailers instead of larger retailers when looking for jewelry?
Wow, I could write a whole page on this alone. Quality, experience, integrity, and talent. As an independently owned store, our success and growth are directly related to serving our customers and building connections within our community. Our goal is to build “lasting” relationships that meet the needs and desires of our customers not just move a product for profit. We have a passion for what we do, to a big box store the product they sell is all about making money.
Big box stores typically sell mass-produced merchandise, chances are if you bought something there so did hundreds or even thousands of people. We are more selective in choosing merchandise in our store, we hand pick every piece. Custom jewelry is a large part of our business each of our custom pieces is a one-of-a-kind made for the customer. Everything from design to manufacturing is done on-site in our state-of-the-art facility.
We employ people from our local area providing good jobs to support their families. I could go on, but in the end, we care.
What is the story behind ‘JAB Jewelry’ becoming a business?
In 1989 I opened a small jewelry service repair center in Downtown Pittsburgh Clark Building. Then in 2009, I had to relocate because more space was needed to cover the growing consumer demands for my service. And then in 2014 more space became imminent as our existing location began with the expansion. September 2015 the renovations were finally complete and our new space adamantly provides a great environment for shopping, designing and just hanging out with friends.
It has given our staff, both in the shop and in the showroom, its much-needed space. It was important to not only have a warm and inviting atmosphere but also provides a great work environment and state-of-the-art facility that enhances the experience for both the employees and clients alike. Are customers allowed to watch their unique pieces being made in your studio?
They are totally involved in the designing process however because of safety concerns and insurance issues customers are not permitted in the shop. We have several jewelers and office personnel working on the production process and customers in the shop would be a distraction to getting the work done. We do on occasion take them through a quick tour and show them the process.
I see one of your employees is a dog named Leggo aka Greeter. How did this position become open to this friendly 4-legged buddy?
Leggo is my dog who loves people and works cheap so it was a perfect fit. Although he is now semi-retired (he’s getting old) he still makes it in from time to time.
Have any celebrities ever visit your retailer?
We have had several local athletes in our store and recently made Kelly’s, from Star100.7 FM, engagement ring.
