While there are plenty of people that find pornography unsavory, a Republican congresswoman from Tennessee believes it to be downright nefarious. Speaking with a group of ministers during a recent “listening session,” Diane Black, who’s running for governor of Tennessee, blamed porn on being the “root cause” of school shootings.
“What makes them do that?” said Black while contemplating what drives some kids to such violence. “Because as a nurse, I go back to root causes.”
“Pornography, it’s available, it’s available on the shelf when you walk in the grocery store,” she said. “Yeah, you have to reach up to get it, but there’s pornography there. All of this is available without parental guidance. And I think that is a big part of the root cause that we see so many young people that have a mental illness.
Black also blamed violence in movies and “deterioration of the family” as contributors to school shootings.
“Violent movies…I mean today, I still cannot watch one of those violent movies where people are being blown up, because I’m not desensitized to that. I didn’t watch that when I was a kid.”
In the roughly two 1/2 minute audio clip from the meeting shared by the Huff Post, Black doesn’t specify why she believes porn contributes to violence in kids so it’s not known if she gave any evidence at some point.
