According to reports, Yusan Rubio and her friends traveled to Honduras on March 12th but did not realize the severity of their situation until the country closed its borders on the 15th. The group tried to book an earlier flight to return home but nothing was available and are currently stuck on the island of Roatan after being evacuated from their hotel.
“We knew about the coronavirus, but we didn’t know it was going to affect us the way it’s affecting us,”
The State Department released a statement to News 12 in regards to the travel advisory in the U.S.:
“The Department of State has no greater priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas. We are exploring all options to address the current travel disruptions. We strongly encourage U.S. citizens to continue working with their airline and/or travel arranger to confirm flight options beyond March 22, 2020.”
The group hopes they can leave the island by the end of the month depending on travel guidelines.
