That the man who leaked the viral clip, as confirmed by Channel 2 Action News, of the deadly shooting of Ahmaud Arbery, is one of the murder suspects.
After catching national attention and later landed him in jail on murder charges with his son Travis McMichael, Greg leaked the video to a radio station two months ago according to Investigative reporter Mark Winne. Apparently, he thought leaking the footage would make him and his son Travis look better and also “wanted to ease rising racial tensions in the South Georgia community of Satilla Shores,” but didn’t elaborate on how it would.
The video shows Greg standing in the back of a pickup truck as his son confronts and opens fire on the jogger with a shotgun. This shocking plot twist was revealed Friday by Alan Tucker, a Brunswick attorney who had informally consulted with the suspects. Tucker told the news site that leaking the video, which had been shot from a second vehicle by a friend of the father and son, was all Greg McMichael’s idea.
As WSBTV notes, the lawyer said Greg McMichael brought the video and others, to his office for help getting it downloaded so it could be sent to local radio station WGIG in Brunswick. Tucker told WSB-TV he also thought leaking the video would help ease racial tensions: “I didn’t want the neighborhood to become a Ferguson,” Tucker told the news site.
However, that clearly backfired. The two men were eventually arrested and charged with murder and aggravated assault. Arbery was just 25 years old.
