Tierra Whack, despite her battle rap origins, has become best known in recent years for her inventive videos, starting with the colorful Whack World and featuring clips like “Dora” and “Unemployed.”
It’s only fitting that the interlocking blocks feature prominently in her new video, “Link,” because there is perhaps no greater representation of the infinite power of imagination than Lego.
She creates a spaceship with the aid of some bright, abstract-looking alien friends in the video, which is one of the most famous Lego creations that almost every kid has put together with the blocks. She sends the ship into space with the intention of exploring it, only to find herself missing her friends and trying to return. Unfortunately, an error in her ship’s design — isn’t there always one? — makes returning even more of a challenge than she anticipated.
The lighthearted video was filmed in collaboration with Lego as part of the Lego Group’s Rebuild The World Campaign, according to a press release. Whack’s hometown students assisted in the creation of the film, from adding their own sound effects to designing the rocket and structures in the video.
Whack says of working with the kids, “I was so excited to work with kids because their energy is fun, exhilarating, never-ending, and full of surprises. I really trusted them, and I knew they were going to come up with something great.”
