The “how it started/how it’s going” post is one of my favorite meme formats on social media these days since it serves as a reminder that life goes on and good things happen despite the seemingly constant deluge of bad news with which we’re bombarded on a daily basis. Although some skeptics saw Drake’s donation to charity in his 2018 “God’s Plan” video as nothing more than a publicity ploy, it turns out that his donations had a lasting positive impact on at least one of their recipients.
Destiny James, the University of Miami student to whom Drake gave a $50,000 scholarship, recently announced her graduation on Instagram, writing, “Mama, I mastered it.” I did it, Daddy. I just have 4 days before I can call myself a UNC alum.” Naturally, the post made its way to Twitter, where it was flipped into the aforementioned meme format by ecstatic fans, comparing the two events that have unquestionably changed Ms. James’ life for the better.
Drake, who will be honored with an Artist of the Decade Award at the upcoming Billboard Music Awards, also congratulated the graduate, commenting on the post, “LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOO DES!” Meanwhile, the artist is getting ready to make his own announcement: the release date of his new album, Certified Lover Boy, which was postponed from its January release date. And his generosity continues; earlier this year, he aided in the repayment of another fan’s student debt.
