McClenney is preparing up to release his new full-length CD, On A Virgo Mind, later this summer on August 13. He shared a new tune with St. Panther today. This 26-year-old producer and songwriter is noted for his work establishing the sound of Black alternative R&B through collaborations with musicians such as Jamila Woods, Chika, H.E.R., Khalid, and others. Actually, McClenney was a collaborator on Khalid’s breakout single, “Location,” which was also nominated for a Grammy.
Returning to his solo career, McClenney has garnered the endorsement of music mogul Quincy Jones and has worked relentlessly to alter the Grammys’ old, coded wording that inaccurately classified Black music categories. He was a co-author of a proposal that urged the organization to drop the term “urban” from its categories in favor of more descriptive terms like “melodic rap.” He also co-authored a proposal that broadened the scope of global music categories.
St. Panther, alias Irvine-born producer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Daniela Bojorges-Giraldo, appears prominently on this week’s taste of his new album, which is more effortless grooving from the self-described “creative Black mind.” Check out the song below and the video for “Give Me Time” above to hear some of his older work. Keep an eye out for additional information about McClenney’s next full-length album.
