Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh have been promoting Black Widow, which has been delayed for nearly a year owing to the coronavirus outbreak, ahead of its combined theatrical and Disney+ release next week. The two’s chemistry has been praised in early reviews and comments, and according to a new interview, that bond was visible off-screen as well. In fact, Johansson and Pugh dunked on each other so frequently in real life that one incident was included in the film.
Pugh told The Hollywood Reporter that the Marvel stunt crew took her off surprise when they contacted her regarding her “position.” As the team pointed out, Johansson has a signature Black Widow pose, which Pugh couldn’t help but mock, and it quickly became canon.
And I was like, “Oh God, I have to think about a pose!?” And they were like, “Yeah, because you know Scarlett’s is this.” And I was like, “I know! Who would actually land like that? That’s ridiculous!” And they were like, “Well, yeah. If she actually landed like that, she would have broken her spine.” And I was like, “You think Scarlett knows this!?” And I remember I was just teasing her for it, and Eric, the writer, was on set and was like, “Yep, that’s going in the script!”
But there are no harsh feelings, as Johansson laughed at the story and how she and the stunt team felt the pose was “badass” the whole time. “Our egos have just been shattered. With that remark, Florence annihilated them in 15 seconds, and of course, it made it into the script.”
