Khalid kept things quiet on the music front for a while after the release of his sophomore album Free Spirit. In the two years that followed, the singer released a few singles, but things have been building up for the Texas native in recent months. Khalid is back with new songs, this time named “New Normal,” with his third album possibly on the way. The song has yet to be officially released, but the singer previewed it during a performance at Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson’s space mission launch on Sunday.
Before its release, Khalid told Rolling Stone that the song was his “personal treatment” during the COVID-19 pandemic last year. He continued, “Around this time last year, I was really captivated and attracted toward space,” linking the song to the launch of the space shuttle. “Last year, I was following a comet named Neowise, and space travel is something that I’ve always been fascinated by. And I’ve been going through the motions of trying to grasp this new, postmodern future that’s forming, particularly when it comes to technology — it’s something that really thrills me.”
Prior to debuting the new song, Khalid teamed with Tate McRae for their collaboration, “Working.” Khalid also connected with J Balvin for “Otra Noche Sin Ti.”
