On the band’s new song “Wolfsbane,” Rico Nasty joins genre-bending rock band Love Ghost to indulge her own hard-rock impulses. A track that digs into folklore and horror iconography to link being a werewolf to living with a mental health issue is held back by grinding guitars that move from punk to metal. That may sound a little strange, but the premise holds up pretty well because to Rico’s devil-may-care manner and frontman Finnegan Bell’s clever songwriting.
Bell told Rolling Stone, “I wanted to compose a song about werewolves, but from the perspective of mental health.” I wanted to write about something you wish you could alter but had to deal with on a daily basis. But, whether it’s mental illness, demons, addiction, or something else, it’s what you become. It’s up to the listener to make that decision.”
Rico, for her part, gave a hearty thumbs up. She explained, “‘Wolfsbane’ wants to get me in my rock bag.” “I love it when musicians invite me into their world and let me rock out with them. This song’s production is incredible. When the beat changes, it gives off two separate vibes, one of which is hard-rock.” Longtime Rico fans will enjoy her indulging her punk-rock tendencies on songs like “OHFR?” from her debut album Nightmare Vacation, but she’s been branching out more recently with tracks like “Magic.”
