Please be aware that this post contains major spoilers for The Suicide Squad.
The Suicide Squad has certain similarities with its predecessor, yet critics tend to prefer the sequel to the 2016 DC antihero film. Some performers reprised their roles in the James Gunn-directed sequel, including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. One of the most stunning stunts in the film, according to the director, was performed entirely by Robbie.
Quinn embarks on a solo trip after her team is blown to bits in the opening prologue, which is one of the film’s many surprising twists. She is tortured for information she refuses to give up after being kidnapped by a dictator with whom she had a homicidal romance. She is tasered till she passes out in one of the film’s many terrible scenes, but we soon learn that this was only a bit of acting to help her escape.
In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn revealed that the scene in which Harley picks the keys with her toes and unlocks herself was entirely improvised by Robbie.
Yes, the most important point is that she was able to seize the key with her foot and rotate herself backwards to insert it into the lock in one shot. And I said to myself, “Oh my God.” It’s a shame because of the item in front of her face, but if you look closely, you can see it’s Margot.
The interview contains a lot more information regarding the decision to do some really unconventional things in what could have been a much more standard superhero film. Gunn compliments Robbie in general, reveals some of what’s to come in the Peacemaker HBO Max series, and has a lot to say about the film’s tone and vibe. While the film office results may not have been what everyone had hoped for, the sequel already appears to feature more memorable moments than the first.
