After two days of action in Las Vegas, the NBA Summer League is now officially in full flow. Day 3 of Summer League features fewer games (only six), but it also features the most anticipated clash of the whole 10-day event, as the top two picks in this year’s NBA Draft square off.
On Tuesday evening, Cade Cunningham and the Pistons will face Jalen Green and the Rockets in what has become an annual tradition of scheduling the first two choices against each other. Cunningham faced Josh Giddey and the Thunder in the opening (albeit only briefly because Giddey’s day was cut short after five minutes due to an ankle sprain) and Green faced Evan Mobley and the Cavs in the second. This contest, on the other hand, is expected to generate a lot more attention and will be the most anticipated game of the tournament for most fans who aren’t rooting for either side.
Green scored 23 points in the Rockets’ season opening, doing what he does best: slicing through the Cavaliers’ defense to get to his spot and score. Cunningham got off to a good start in his debut, displaying the two-way skill that has had him penciled in as a top choice for years, but cooled off after that and will seek to improve on his 12 points and six rebounds from Sunday.
While that remains the major event (and the night’s only game on ESPN), there are five more games to see, including rookies Jalen Johnson and Sharife Cooper (Hawks), Chris Duarte (Pacers), Josh Primo (Spurs), Davion Mitchell (Kings), Corey Kispert (Wizards), and Keenan Johnson (Clippers).
