Adventure Time, the Emmy Award-winning animated series, is back and ready to go to more far-flung countries — and networks — than ever before. Warner Bros. revealed earlier today that the former Cartoon Network show will get a spinoff series on HBO Max starring fan favorites Fionna and Cake. The series, now named Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, follows the couple as they “embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and voyage of self-discovery” with an unusual partner — former Ice King Simon Petrikov, according to the press announcement. In addition to all the usual challenges a couple of young adventurers might face, the series also will introduce a “powerful new antagonist” for Fionna and Cake who is “determined to track them down and erase them from existence.”
Fionna and Cake are the “gender-bent” versions of Adventure Time heroes Finn the Human and Jake the Dog, who were first introduced in 2011. The two first appeared in a one-off episode titled “Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake,” which followed the pair as they rescued Prince Gumball (a male counterpart of Princess Bubblegum) from the terrifying Ice Queen during the show’s third season. Fionna and Cake went on to feature in four more episodes of Adventure Time and have since become a popular part of the franchise.
While the rest of the cast has yet to be announced, Adventure Time fans will be pleased to know long-time writer, director, and showrunner Adam Muto is headed over to HBO to serve as both showrunner and executive producer of the new series. Billy Wee, the SVP of Comedy and Original Animation at HBO Max says the service is “thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world-class team.”
There is currently no release date set for Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake. Meanwhile, Adventure Time viewers may see three one-hour HBO original specials set in the universe of candy-people and lump space nobility as part of the Adventure Time: Distant Lands collection. Wizard City, the fourth and final special, will air on HBO Max later this fall.
