It’s no accident that when Bridgerton premiered on Netflix last winter, it drew over 83 million viewers. It has everything you could want in a binge-worthy, feel-good romance: breathtaking settings, gorgeous costumes, and fascinating performances from a slew of attractive characters keen on wooing each other in said outfits. The show immediately gained a reputation for its delicate moments and sensual scenes, with one of the most memorable incorporating actor Regé-Jean Page’s tongue and cutlery.
While it may appear that the show was designed to make viewers swoon, Bridgerton showrunner Chris Van Dusen stated in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that all of the show’s hottest moments were planned ahead of time. The Bridgerton writers’ room, according to Van Dusen, was hell-bent on creating “thirsty moments” to sprinkle throughout the show, and the famed spoon-licking was just one of them.
The spoon lick was scripted, and those were some of the most enjoyable days I’ve ever spent in the writers’ room. We challenged ourselves to come up with these ‘thirsty’ moments, and one of them was the spoon. We had a lot of fun pitching those ideas in the room, and there were a lot of them. There are plenty more in the series to come.
While none of these potential “thirsty moments” will include Page, who has announced he will not return for Bridgerton season 2, we can’t wait to see what the rest of the ensemble has in store. The rose-tinted world of Bridgerton has yet to receive a launch date for season 2, although it was said to start filming earlier this year, putting it on track for early 2022. The show is remains Netflix’s most-watched show ever, with 12 Emmy nominations, including one for Page’s role as Simon, the Duke of Hastings. If you haven’t already, add it to your binge-worthy list.
