Larry Fitzgerald, a 17-year veteran Arizona Cardinals receiver, told cohosts Jim Gray and Tom Brady on his new SiriusXM show Friday that he had no desire to play in the NFL right now.
Fitzgerald admitted, “To be honest with you, I just don’t have the want to play right now.” “I’m not sure how I’ll feel in September, October, or November, but right now, I just don’t feel like it.”
Fitzgerald, who will turn 38 next month, advised against competing when a player’s heart isn’t in it.
“Football is not one of those games you want to walk out there and play and not be fully engaged and ready to prepare and do the things necessary that you need to do,” he said.
Fitzgerald chose not to make a decision about his future over the course of the summer after multiple seasons of an extended offseason waiting game that had always concluded with Fitzgerald signing a short deal to return to the Cardinals. He is still a free agent and hasn’t retired yet.
The Cardinals replaced him with veteran A.J. Green and drafted Purdue’s Rondale Moore. DeAndre Hopkins, the team’s leading receiver, is still in place, and head coach Kliff Kingsbury has stated that the team has a plan in place if Fitzgerald decides to play.
