We’re just living in Olivia Rodrigo’s Billboard chart. Seriously, the pop star has been dominating the charts since the release of her first official single, “Driver’s License” at the beginning of 2020, and it seems like every other week there’s a new story about her breaking yet another record or clinching yet another victory on the industry’s official ranking board. Her debut album Sour has reclaimed the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, thanks to a jump in vinyl purchases.
Despite the fact that Sour was released in May, it has returned to the top of the list not once, twice, or even three times, but four times before this week, thanks to various promotions such as her Sour Prom concert film. Rodrigo’s debut has now spent a fifth week at the top of the charts, thanks to the official release of Sour on vinyl. The record has spent the second-most weeks at No. 1 this year, trailing only Morgan Wallen’s Dangerous: The Double Album, according to Billboard.
Olivia has a lot in common with her idol, Taylor Swift, who had a similar rush when the ever-increasing pre-orders eventually processed around the same time Sour was released in May. Lorde’s third album Solar Power debuted at No. 3 behind Olivia and Trippie Red, which is remarkable for pop fans. That’s not awful company! The whole report can be seen here.
