It’s not every day that something related to famed Swedish director Ingmar Bergman makes the news, but that’s exactly what happened during Labor Day weekend. Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac attended the Venice Film Festival to promote their HBO miniseries version of Ingmar Bergman’s classic Scenes from a Marriage, about a marriage that slowly unravels over several years. People couldn’t take it when a moment on the red carpet was so electric, so powerful, so hot.
A video of the two posing for cameras while promoting a show about two people who eventually discover their marriage is a mistake has surfaced. His hand rests on her shoulder. His gaze is drawn to her bicep. He gives it a gentle kiss. She pushes him away from her. They laugh it off when she clasps his face with both hands. And it’s all shot in seductive slo-mo.
The two have a long history together. They became friends after meeting at Julliard and have stayed pals ever since. They’ve worked together previously; in the 2014 drama A Most Violent Year, they portrayed husband and wife. They’ve also both starred as antagonists in X-Men films. They’re both married to other people as well.
Nonetheless, the incident enraged social media.
Scenes from a Marriage updates Bergman’s original, which aired as a miniseries in Sweden in 1973 and was cut into a lengthy movie for America. It starred frequent Bergman collaborators Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson. It’s not clear how closely the revamp will follow the original, but if so, America is in for quite a ride. You can find out when it kicks off its five-episode run on September 12.
