Willow Smith recently re-awakened our inner emo selves with “Transparent Soul,” and now Blake Red is set to continue the trend. In Red’s 4-song EP, The Cradle, she provides classic punk rock sounds.
While “The Reincarnation” falls a little flat, “The Darkness” feat. Nona Hendryx picks everything back up with a sleuthy sound as Blake sings that “sometimes you got to level with the darkness.” The EP ends with “Follow Me” which provides a seemingly uplifting tune with a tinge of darkness laced throughout the lyrics (this is pop punk afterall!)
“Holding out for one more day / Wrote a note of what I’d say / Don’t mind taking all the blame,” she sings. “My window opens up at night / I hide my face from any light / You’re my biggest sacrifice, yeah.”
Another standout track is unsurprisingly the titular song where Red brings just the right about of edge and breaks out into another electric guitar solo (around the 2:20 mark).
