St. Vincent just released her new album, Daddy’s Home, but she’s already working on a new project. Her and Carrie Brownstein’s film The Nowhere Inn is, of course, that project. A month ago, a trailer for the film was published, and now we have our first look at the score/soundtrack, which includes new St. Vincent music. She released a video for the title track today, which is a dramatic and evocative number that functions as a type of movie theme song.
The soundtrack will be released on September 19, just a few days after the film’s debut.
In a recent interview with Los Angeles Daily News, St. Vincent said of the movie:
“I’m so amazed and thrilled that somebody let us… gave us money to make a crazy film about me, sure, but also just about identity and the pitfalls when someone starts to believe in their mythology and floats off into outer space, or becomes craven in an attempt to hold onto their little idea of things.
I’m not doing what these things are supposed to accomplish, which is endear you to a pop star. That isn’t the point of the movie, and it may be harmful in this day and age. And that’s a good thing. We only have one life, so why live it half-heartedly? Let’s do something out of the ordinary that people will remember. I believe that art is supposed to be risky. I believe it is intended to be frightening at times. It’s intended to let us explore the depths and reaches of our brains, as well as provide a safe environment for us to play with fire.”
