Eric Clapton delivered a 14-song concert at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans on Saturday, including hits like “Layla” and “Wonderful Tonight.” Nothing about that appears noteworthy, but given Clapton’s previous past, the show did raise some eyebrows.
According to the venue’s website, “all ticketholders age 12 and up, staff, vendors, and participants must provide evidence of 1) having received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine that has received full approval or emergency use authorization from the United States Food and Drug Administration or the World Health Organization, or 2) evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR tetanus test.”
Clapton’s performance in this situation contradicts what he had previously stated. Boris Johnson, the UK Prime Minister, said on July 19 that vaccination permits would be required to visit venues. Clapton responded with a statement that stated, “Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Monday, July 19th, 2021, I feel honor-bound to make an announcement of my own.” I would want to state that I would not perform in front of a discriminated crowd on any stage. I reserve the right to cancel the show unless arrangements are made for everyone to attend.”
