When Dennis Schroder signed a one-year deal with the Boston Celtics for less than $6 million, jokes flew. Schroder reportedly turned down a substantial offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, possibly up to $84 million in total, before his market dried up and he signed the deal with Boston. Schroder seemed self-aware when he steered into the “fumbled the bag” comments about his apparent contractual blunder in mid-September, but on Monday, the 28-year-old was singing a different tune when he claimed that he did not have the infamous $84 million deal “in front of” him to sign.
“The Lakers told us we are not talking during the season, and at the end of the day, I never had that contract in front of me,” Schröder indicated to reporters at Media Day (via Boston.com). “That’s one thing. But they wanted to talk and at the end of the day, me and my agent decided not to sign their contract.”
When Dennis Schroder agreed to a one-year contract with the Boston Celtics for less than $6 million, jokes flew. Before inking the deal with Boston, Schroder reportedly rejected down a substantial offer from the Los Angeles Lakers, potentially up to $84 million in total. Fortunately, Schroder has had contracts worth more than $70 million with the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Los Angeles Lakers, so he’s in good shape. Schroder stated that “money isn’t everything all of the time” and that he is “content” in his current position.
“For me and my family, I signed a pretty good contract after my fourth year, and my family and myself, we’re going to be good,” Schroder said on Monday. “I’m 28 years old, and I’m still playing in the NBA for a long time.”
It’ll be intriguing to see what type of deal Schroder can get after this season, but he’ll have plenty of chances to do so in Boston. For what he has been able to deliver, the Celtics were able to snag him on a cheap contract, and there is a path to success for all parties involved in Boston.
