Big Thief has often demonstrated that they are more than seasoned songwriters. Big Thief are slated to return in 2022 with a mammoth 20-track double album, following two back-to-back albums in 2019.
The band revealed the news in a recent print interview with Mojo Magazine, which was obtained by a Reddit user, claiming that the majority of the songs were written in a scorching hot two-week quarantine songwriting session in Vermont in July of 2020. When it came to writing new music, vocalist Adrianna Lenker stated the band was “frenzied.” “We must have amassed approximately 50 tracks that we liked,” Lenker remarked. “It’s possible to reduce 20 to 12, but not 50.”
The tunes are described as “bombastic, crazy, and hi-fi,” according to Lenker. Some tracks are “more calm, inward, and reflective,” while others are “raw and no fat, just tunes, and acoustic,” according to her. She went on to say, “I’ve found that a lot of this record is more upbeat and hopeful.” “Which, given the times, is amusing. And there’s more acceptance of oneself as well as the current paradigm. The enigmas of humanity and how it’s all coming together. I’m sure I’ll be writing about it until the day I die!”
The album announcement arrives after Big Thief shared a handful of new tracks in recent months, including the songs “Certainty,” “Little Things,” and “Sparrow.” They also just finished up a month-long North American tour, which kicked off in early September.
