Governor Newsom has been putting pressure on the pen in Chile since he won the recall election. He signed a new ethnic studies requirement into law on Friday. Newsom signed, sealed, and delivered a law that requires students to take an ethnic studies course as part of their high school diploma requirements. Newsom added, “Ethnic studies classes enable children to study their own stories – as well as those of their classmates.” Ethnic studies would “help increase educational opportunities in schools, teach kids about the diverse cultures that make up California, and boost academic engagement and attainment for students,” according to a news statement from Newsom’s office, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Graduates in 2030 will be subject to the law. This comes after political authorities questioned and objected to the teaching of Critical Race Theory. While other leaders, including as Governor Abbott, have stated that it is not required, Newsom believes it is. “Our shared history has created America, much of it tragic and carved with heinous injustice. “If we expect students to establish a more just society one day,” Newsom remarked, “we must grasp our nation’s complete history.” California is also said to be the first state to do so.
