When God of War was released on the PlayStation 4 in 2018, it was a huge hit. This was not only due to the fact that it was the most recent installment in the series, but also because it told a tale that was far more complex than any previous God of War game. Long-time fans of the franchise will recall that the game has always been available solely on PlayStation systems. It’s understandable why this is the case with games made by Sony’s Santa Monica Studio.
On Tuesday, PlayStation confirmed that God of War will no longer be exclusive to PlayStation. God of War will be transferred to PC in January 2022, despite being developed by a Sony first-party company. Anyone who wants to play the game but doesn’t have a PlayStation can do so today by purchasing it on Steam or the Epic Games Store.
This is huge news for a number of reasons, the most important of which is that PlayStation is gladly porting one of its most popular franchises. While this isn’t the same as putting the game on an Xbox, PlayStation has always been picky about which games it allows to be ported. They’re one of the few businesses that still believes in exclusives, so seeing them port God of War could mean that the era of exclusives is coming to an end, or at the very least that they’ll be more likely to do so in the future.
