One of the most popular video game franchises in the world is Call of Duty. Every year, millions of copies of the first-person military shooter franchise are sold, and a devoted following awaits each new installment. Unfortunately for them, anyone who has tried to keep up with Call of Duty over the years has found it more difficult to play all of the games in the series. Since the release of Modern Warfare and Warzone, the series has been known for its excessively huge file sizes. A regular 500GB PlayStation 4 couldn’t hold the three most recent Call of Duty titles on a single console at one point.
It’s easy to see why these games are so popular. The level of detail put into them, as well as the size of games like Warzone, add to the large download file. Thankfully, it appears that the franchise’s developers are beginning to work around this by creating games that are at least significantly smaller. The next Call of Duty: Vanguard will be a large game in contrast to other Call of Duty games, but it will be smaller in comparison to other Call of Duty games.
CoD’s blog has information on the download size and other aspects of the future game.
Due to new on-demand texture streaming tech, Vanguard’s install size at launch will be significantly below that of previous Call of Duty releases – up to 30% – 50%+ of a file size difference on next-gen console and PC.
By console, these are the estimated file sizes needed to install Vanguard at launch, including via pre-load, as well as the disk space needed to play the game:
PlayStation 5: 64.13 GB Download | 89.84 GB Required Space
PlayStation 4: 54.65 GB Download | 93.12 GB Required Space
Xbox Series X |S: 61 GB Download | 61 GB Required Space
Xbox One: 56.6 GB Download | 56.6 GB Required Space
Given that Black Ops Cold War surpassed 100 GB on some platforms and that a patch was required to reduce Warzone’s size, we should all be pleased to learn that all of these console sizes begin at less than 100 GB. Hopefully, future patches don’t take them much farther.
One thing that stands out is how much larger the PlayStation is than the Xbox in terms of required space. This is due to a PlayStation-only bug in which the console demands players to have additional storage space before downloading a game. Despite the fact that the game is smaller, PlayStation gamers will still require about 100GB of free space to download Vanguard.
