Conan Gray is back with another adored pop hit, hot on the heals of announcing a major 2022 global tour. Like any good Gen Z songwriter, the Gen Z singer has been effusive in his love for Taylor Swift, and he’s back on his cheerful anthem tip today. This new single, “Telepath,” is far more in line with another early 2021 track, “Overdrive,” than his previous single, the gently vulnerable “People Watching.” That song, though, was a happy-go-lucky ode to being in love, whereas this one is about the predictability of being dumped.
“Telepath,” written by Julia Michaels, Ilya, and Caroline Ailin, combats the casual cruelty of being dumped by forecasting that the fickle lover will be back for more very soon. Gray’s debut album, Kid Krow, was published soon before the pandemic altered life as we knew it, particularly for touring musicians. Gray has consistently released success after hit since the album dropped, despite the continuously evolving climate.
Gray acknowledged to being a touch surprised by how things turned out when we chatted about his career for a profile article last year. “I’d tell seven-year-old Conan that he successfully duped millions of people into believing he could write songs,” he joked as he imagined what he would tell his younger self. “‘You did it, you did it!’ I’d say. You deceived them.’ But I suppose I’m still motivated to perform a decent job since you never know when things like this can vanish.”
