Drake’s favorite pastimes are basketball and women, as far as we know. So it’s understandable that he’d desire to merge the two in his hometown with a WNBA team. Drake, who already serves as an ambassador for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors, made his case in the early hours of the morning on Instagram, sharing a single-frame Instagram Story that simply stated, “@WNBA, I need a Toronto franchise.“
This opens up a world of intriguing possibilities. Would Drake be the property’s owner? Would he be interested in a job as an ambassador, such to the one he has with the Raptors? What would the name of the team be? The Raptors’ entire concept was based on the popularity of the original Jurassic Park the year the team was founded, so you have to hope it’s not dinosaur-themed.
What impact would this have on the league as a whole? You’d imagine that adding only one club would significantly disrupt the season schedule, so how many teams would be established in an expansion? Is there going to be an expansion draft? How would the talent in the W, which has just undergone a major shakeup with the signing of a new CBA, be redistributed to ensure parity?
For now, this is all just speculation and spitballing, but it would sure be fun to find out that the (much-needed) expansion is actually in the works. It’d probably be even more fun to see the self-declared Certified Lover Boy sitting courtside, cheering on favorites like Candace Parker, Chiney Ogwumike, and Aja Wilson, bringing some well-deserved publicity to the WNBA.
