Though Lorde’s Solar Power album and the self-titled first single that set it off didn’t exactly win over critics this year, the song has been covered by a slew of artists in the business. Griff covered it for her Spotify Singles release earlier this year, and now Glass Animals, a massive UK indie-pop band, have taken their hand at a version as well. Glass Animals just wrapped up a major live tour after receiving a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist, so this is a lovely end cap for fans who might have missed a live event.
Dave Bayley and his crew changed the breathy, ’70s-inspired anthem into a far glitchier thing during a visit to the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge, where every visiting band performs a live rendition for fans. Because electronic pop music is their thing — and it used to be Lorde’s — their take makes sense. What, on the other hand, made the whole thing even better? The band’s soulful backup singers, who were called in to assist flesh out their more lively version. Bayley’s trademark falsetto sounded wonderful accompanied by the female vocalists who were singing harmonies at a slightly different speed.
