Khalid hasn’t released a project to the public in a couple of years. His most recent album, Free Spirit, was published in the spring of 2019, and since then, the Forth Worth singer has released several songs while working on his third album. Even though Khalid’s new record, Everything Is Changing, isn’t ready for release yet, he returns with his latest tape, Scenic Drive, to satisfy his anxiously waiting fans. “I’ve been waiting for this one and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it,” he said last month in a tweet announcing the project, and it’s finally here.
The project’s main single, which also features Smino and Ari Lennox, is a standout. The three combines their abilities for a captivating album about fleeing to a better world with your lover. Khalid, Ari, and Smino each describe the qualities of their various spouses that they enjoy escaping to. Lucky Daye, 6lack, Kiana Lede, JID, Majid Jordan, Quin, and Alicia Keys all make appearances on Scenic Drive’s nine songs.
Khalid talked on the challenges and pressures of creating a new body of work before the release of Scenic Drive. “I simply want to be the artist I want to be because producing is what saves me from losing my sanity,” he wrote on Twitter, “but my passion is fading a bit more every day.” “I just want to finish this record, and it’s driving me insane right now,” he said. “I’m going to refocus, finish this album without stress, and put out something I truly believe in.”
