The U.S. men’s basketball team has apparently selected its replacement to head coach Gregg Popovich. Team USA is “finalizing a decision to select” Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr as its new head coach, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams, Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra, and Gonzaga men’s basketball head coach Mark Few will join Kerr on the bench. Kerr, who was a member of the gold-medal-winning Olympic team this summer, will succeed Popovich in the World Cup and the 2024 Paris Olympics. “A formal statement is likely in the near future,” Wojnarowski stated.
The Athletic’s Joe Vardon corroborated Wojnarowski’s claim, adding that a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers has a chance to make the national team’s center position, which has been a source of contention in recent years.
Kerr takes over a program that has won gold in the last four Olympic Games. The distance between America and other national programs, on the other hand, is narrowing. Team USA finished eighth in the 2019 World Cup after losing to France in the quarterfinals. Team USA was upset by France in the group stages this summer, but the Americans were able to avenge themselves in the gold medal game.
