The College Classics mode was one of the best aspects of the earlier NCAA Football video games. This allowed participants to watch classic college football games and moments, such as “The Play” in Stanford-California 1982 or Doug Flutie’s legendary Hail Mary. The fact that these modes sometimes permitted the player to modify history was what made them so enjoyable. Remember Ohio State’s exciting Fiesta Bowl triumph over Miami in 2003? Players in College Classics were able to modify the outcome of the game to favor Miami.
Unfortunately, we haven’t had a college football game in a long time, and while a new one is on the way, Madden 22 has been the only option to obtain that experience. Players may now play college football in a video game thanks to their Campus Legends mode, which is a pretty watered-down version of the sport. Still, seeing those ancient helmets go head to head against one another has been entertaining.
With the recent teaser that Alabama and Ohio State will be introduced to Madden’s Campus Legends mode via Superstar KO later this week, the fun might continue. Essentially, this means that fans will be able to compete against some of the finest players from both teams on the virtual gridiron. This will provide fans with some amusing what-if situations, but it will also provide an opportunity to revisit the most recent meeting between these two: the National Championship game in 2021.
Almost everyone remembers that game as the moment when one of the best collections of talents in Alabama history came together to dominate a strong Justin Fields-led Ohio State team to a national championship. The matchup featured future pro players like Jaylen Waddle, DeVonta Smith, Najee Harris, Mac Jones, Pete Werner, Josh Myers, and soon-to-be draft studs like Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. Ohio State has a chance to even the playing field with Chase Young on defense and Ezekiel Elliot in the backfield, and it’s the kind of game we’d love to see replayed in virtual reality. Of course, this also means Alabama is getting to add Derrick Henry and an entire starting 11 of first-round picks on defense.
Thanks to Campus Legends we can finally do something that has been missing from sports games for far too long: take the best programs in college football history, throw them on a roster together, and put them against one another in the title match to end all title matches.
