After LIzzo popularized the flute in pop music, Jacob “NTHNL” Rudin is sharing his own body of work with the woodwind instrument. The album starts off slow with somewhat of a flute solo in the opening track “Prelude,” but quickly picks up in the next song “Neon Flow.” Similar to “Neon Flow,’ most of the album is pretty groovy and melodic as it blends together smooth jazz, electropop, and lo-fi music.
“Our Secret” is another standout (and has a music video!) The jazzy tune could easily be placed on a lofi hip-hop playlist.
“I’m not quite sure why I made this album. [It] for some reason felt important to me to make a flute-fronted pop album to celebrate this instrument and to give it a wildly new context in which to sing,” said NTHNL in a statement provided to press. “The flute is the oldest instrument we have evidence of, dating back at least 40000 years to both humans proper and Neanderthals. This instrument is almost as universal as music itself across human culture and serves as the gateway between the spiritual and the corporeal.”
