Zendaya Becomes Highest-Paid Black Actress in TV History with Groundbreaking ‘Euphoria’ Contract

In a landmark achievement, 28-year-old actress Zendaya has renegotiated her contract with HBO to earn $1 million per episode for the upcoming third season of the critically acclaimed series ‘Euphoria.’ This agreement not only underscores her exceptional talent but also establishes her as the youngest and highest-paid Black actress in television history.

Zendaya’s portrayal of Rue Bennett, a teenager grappling with addiction and identity, has garnered widespread acclaim for its depth and authenticity. Her compelling performance earned her the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2020, making her the youngest recipient of this honor at the age of 24. She secured the award again in 2022, becoming the only Black woman to win it twice.

The $1 million per episode deal places Zendaya among the elite echelons of television actors. Historically, such figures have been achieved by the lead cast of ‘Friends’ in their final season and the main actors of ‘Game of Thrones.’ Notably, Angela Bassett previously set a record for the highest-paid Black actress on network television, earning $450,000 per episode for her role in ‘9-1-1.’

While the substantial pay raise has been met with widespread support, some social media users have questioned its fairness. Critics argue that from a purely talent perspective, such compensation is excessive. However, many fans and industry professionals have defended Zendaya’s earnings, emphasizing her undeniable talent and the significant impact of her work on ‘Euphoria.’

In her 2022 Emmy acceptance speech, Zendaya expressed her hope that ‘Euphoria’ could serve as a source of healing for viewers. She conveyed gratitude to those who have shared their stories with her, stating, “I want you to know that anyone who has loved a Rue or feels like they are a Rue, I want you to know I’m so grateful for your stories, and I carry them with me, and I carry them with her.”

As anticipation builds for Season 3 of ‘Euphoria,’ fans and critics alike eagerly await the next chapter in Rue’s journey, confident that Zendaya’s performance will continue to captivate and inspire.
