The disappearance of 20-year-old University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki during a spring break trip to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, has taken a complex turn as authorities detain a person of interest under contentious circumstances.
Disappearance Details
On March 6, 2025, Konanki was last seen around 4 a.m., walking toward the beach with a group of friends, including 22-year-old Iowa native Joshua Riibe. Surveillance footage captured Konanki and Riibe walking arm-in-arm near the beach at approximately 4:15 a.m. While others returned to the hotel, Konanki and Riibe remained on the beach. Later that morning, Konanki’s clothes were discovered on a sunbed near the shoreline, but there was no sign of her whereabouts.
Person of Interest and Detention Conditions
Riibe has been identified as a person of interest in the case. According to reports, he has been detained under irregular conditions, confined to his hotel room under police surveillance, and subjected to extensive questioning without official translators or legal counsel until March 12. His family has expressed serious concerns regarding his treatment and has retained legal counsel to ensure his safety and protect his rights throughout the investigation.
Conflicting Accounts
Authorities have noted that Riibe’s accounts of the events leading to Konanki’s disappearance have been inconsistent. During a press conference on March 10, Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader stated that Riibe reported a wave hitting them while they were on the beach, causing a situation that may have led to Konanki’s disappearance.
Ongoing Investigation
Dominican authorities, with support from international agencies, continue to search for Konanki. The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office has urged the public to avoid drawing unsubstantiated conclusions, emphasizing their commitment to conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding Konanki’s disappearance.
As the investigation unfolds, concerns about the treatment of individuals involved and the need for a transparent, fair process remain at the forefront.
