In early February 2025, the tight-knit community of Lincoln Heights, Ohio, faced an unsettling incident that tested its unity and resolve. A group of about a dozen neo-Nazis, brandishing swastika flags and some carrying firearms, assembled on a highway overpass at the border of Lincoln Heights and Evendale. They displayed banners with hateful messages, including one that read “America is for the White Man,” and hurled racial slurs at passersby.

The residents of Lincoln Heights, a predominantly Black suburb with a rich history dating back to the 1920s, were quick to respond. Community members confronted the demonstrators, leading the neo-Nazis to retreat into a U-Haul truck. Local police intervened, positioning themselves between the two groups to prevent escalation.

The incident sparked outrage among residents, who criticized the police for not preventing the demonstration and for allowing the neo-Nazis to leave without consequence. Many perceived a bias in the authorities’ handling of the situation, feeling that the police were more protective of the agitators than the community members.

In the days following the demonstration, the community organized vigils and counter-demonstrations, drawing hundreds in solidarity against hate. Some residents took it upon themselves to form armed patrols, known as the “Lincoln Heights Protectors,” to safeguard their neighborhood from potential future threats.

This incident in Lincoln Heights is part of a troubling resurgence of white supremacist activity in the region. In nearby Maysville, Kentucky, a Ku Klux Klan faction has been distributing hate-filled flyers and using the local post office as its national office, causing unrest in various states. This uptick in extremist actions has been emboldened by anti-immigration rhetoric at the national level, leading to increased racial tension in communities across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Despite these challenges, the residents of Lincoln Heights remain resolute. Their swift and unified response to the neo-Nazi demonstration underscores a community that refuses to be intimidated, standing together to protect their home and uphold their values. As they continue to demand accountability and action from local authorities, Lincoln Heights exemplifies resilience in the face of hate.
