In the wake of President Trump’s recent tariff announcements, Americans are bracing for imminent price hikes on a variety of everyday items. Economist Dr. Sung Won Sohn from Loyola Marymount University emphasizes the urgency for consumers to act swiftly in purchasing certain goods before costs escalate.

Grocery Staples on the Rise

A significant portion of the U.S.’s produce is imported, making items like avocados particularly vulnerable. Dr. Sohn highlights, “We import 80% of avocados that we consume in America and those are perishable items, so they will be more expensive immediately.” Other staples such as tea, coffee, and bananas are also expected to see swift price increases.

Home Appliances Feeling the Heat

Appliances, especially washers and dryers from South Korean manufacturers, are anticipated to become more expensive. This is due to their classification alongside vehicles and car parts, which have been hit with a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles. While existing inventories may delay immediate price jumps, consumers should anticipate higher costs in the near future.

Furniture Prices Set to Climb

The U.S. imported approximately $9.4 billion worth of furniture from China in 2023. With China facing a cumulative 54% tariff rate, furniture prices are projected to rise accordingly. Consumers considering new furniture purchases might benefit from acting promptly to avoid these impending increases.

Electronics and Vehicles Not Spared

Electronics, including popular items like iPhones and televisions, are also on the list of goods expected to see price hikes. The administration’s 34% reciprocal tariff on Chinese imports means that products manufactured there and imported into the U.S. could become more expensive soon after the levies go into effect on April 9. Additionally, the 25% tariff on imported vehicles may lead to reduced discounts from car dealerships, making automobiles more costly for consumers.

Act Now to Save Later

Given the breadth of products affected by these tariffs, from groceries to electronics, it’s prudent for consumers to consider making necessary purchases sooner rather than later. Being proactive can help mitigate the impact of these price increases on household budgets.
