In a harrowing event that has shaken the community of Madera, California, 30-year-old Narciso Gallardo Fernandez allegedly entered a Walgreens store on the evening of March 31, 2025, and fatally shot 34-year-old employee Erick Velasquez. Authorities report that Fernandez, who had no known connection to Velasquez, expressed a deep-seated animosity towards large pharmacy chains, which may have motivated his actions.

Surveillance footage reveals Fernandez entering the store around 9:30 p.m., brandishing a handgun. He first shot at a security camera before turning the weapon on Velasquez. After the initial shooting, Fernandez reportedly aimed his gun at other employees as they fled the scene.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered Fernandez in the parking lot, in the process of reloading his firearm. He surrendered without resistance and was taken into custody. Fernandez has since been charged with homicide and is being held at Madera County Jail.

The victim, Erick Velasquez, is remembered by colleagues and family as a loving father of two with a bright personality. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to support his grieving family during this difficult time.

Walgreens has expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing their commitment to supporting employees and cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation. They are providing on-site counseling services to staff affected by the tragedy.

This incident has raised concerns about the safety of retail workers and the potential risks posed by individuals harboring grievances against corporations. Authorities continue to investigate Fernandez’s background and mental state to determine the exact motive behind the attack.
