In a controversial move that has sparked international debate, 24-year-old American YouTuber Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov was arrested by Indian authorities for illegally attempting to contact the isolated Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island. North Sentinel Island, part of India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands, is home to the Sentinelese people, one of the world’s last uncontacted tribes. The Indian government has strictly prohibited any approach to the island, enforcing a 5.5-kilometer exclusion zone to protect the tribe from external diseases and to respect their desire for isolation. Despite these regulations, Polyakov embarked on a nine-hour journey by inflatable dinghy to the island.
