In the early hours of April 13, 2025, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s official residence in Harrisburg was the target of a deliberate arson attack while the governor, his family, and guests were inside celebrating Passover. The suspect, 38-year-old Cody Balmer, has been arrested and faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault.
According to authorities, Balmer scaled a 7-foot security fence, broke into the mansion’s southern wing, and used homemade incendiary devices—beer bottles filled with gasoline—to ignite fires in multiple rooms. The attack caused significant damage to the Georgian-style mansion, though no injuries were reported.
Balmer reportedly harbored hatred toward Governor Shapiro and admitted to planning to harm him with a hammer. Investigators are examining whether antisemitism played a role in the attack, as the incident occurred during a Jewish holiday.
Governor Shapiro, a Democrat and potential 2028 presidential candidate, held a press conference condemning the violence and affirming his commitment to public service. He stated, “This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society, and I don’t give a damn if it’s coming from one particular side or the other … it is not OK, and it has to stop.”
The FBI and Pennsylvania State Police are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the attack. Authorities are also reviewing security measures at the governor’s residence to prevent future incidents.
