Last week saw the release of two of most highly anticipated album releases of the year.
Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday were sure to sell well in a year with yet another weak showing at the registers, and also aided by the Black Friday craze with shoppers getting geared up for Christmas.
The preliminary numbers are in and according to Nielsen SoundScan, Kanye West will debut atop the Billboard 200 chart with more than 495,000 copies sold of his new album, while Nicki Minaj will land in the number two spot with over 375,000 copies sold of her long-waited debut.
After more than two years of headlining and guest appearing on tracks from everyone from Gucci Mane to Robin Thicke, anticipation was high for Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday.
Minaj just narrowly missed the record for the best debut album by female rapper. That honor goes to a Miss Lauryn Hill who in 1998 released The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which moved 423,000 units in it’s first week.
