The United Nations has appointed Tennis superstar Serena Williams to be the UNICEF’S newest international Goodwill Ambassador. UNICEF’s Executive Director Anthony Lake announced Serena William’s appointment this past Tuesday. He also added that William’s is known as a philanthropist and champion to many children.
Serena Williams got involved with UNICEF in 2006 when she travelled to Ghana for the African country’s biggest health campaign. During this health campaign the health workers helped immunize children against childhood diseases and distributing free mosquito nets to prevent malaria.
With UNICEF, Williams will use her popularity to support the U.N. agency’s mission to provide a quality education for vulnerable children. Some celebrities who have and are currently UNICEF ambassadors include Audrey Hepburn, David Beckham, and Shakira.
