The celebrities spoke about their backgrounds and the challenges they face in Hollywood. Laz Alonso recently addressed the issue about his ethnicity on an interview with Latina magazine.
The 37 year old Jumping the Broom star explained, “I always like to say that whether you’re African American, Afro-Jamaican, Afro-Haitian, Afro-British, Afro-Cuban, and Afro-Panamanian, whatever— black is black. We all came from Africa and we all ended up in different countries all over the world, but the root of the tree is still black — period. This division that we’ve created by identifying what kind of Black you are, I think, is stupid. I’m no less black than an African American when it comes to playing an African American role, because my roots are from Africa and I was born and raised in America.”
The video is insightful about what it’s like to grow up in bilingual households, not only for celebrities but for all people who come from mixed family backgrounds.
