Aw Shucks! Our deck collapsed.
A deck at a Miami sports bar collapsed injured at least 24 people Thursday night. Three have critical injuries.
Shucker’s, a popular sports bar in Miami, is located in Miami’s North Bay Village and connected to a Best Western. The bar saw many people for the NBA Finals game, as it featured their Miami Heat. Shuckers has a deck that extends over Biscayne Bay. According to WebProNews, Shucker’s deck hangs six feet above the shallow bay.
CNN said about 100 people were on the deck watching the game. The Heat were playing a superb game, and the crowd was going wild. Since it was so loud, many of the patrons did not realize the deck was cracking. One minute, they are watching Lebron stuff Tim Duncan, the next they are in the bay. According to The State, Chris Volz saw the deck collapse from his seat at the Western end of the bar. Volz, only ten feet away from the destruction, said, “Everybody’s watching the game. It sounded like a freight train, then everyone was gone. The deck went down like a V.”
According to The Inquisitr, debris from the deck made the rescue efforts difficult. Bartenders dove in to help. Helicopters and boats were called in. As witness Ernesto Reyes said, “It was a very chaotic scene.”
Jenice Rosado, interim village manager, told the Miami Herald that they tend to delve deep into Shuckers’ records. Rosado told the Herald they are trying to find out if the deck had any work done recently, and the last time it was inspected. Nothing will be left out, as Rosado said, “At this moment, everything is still under investigation.”
After the Heat won game 4, star guard Dwayne Wade expressed the team’s concern when they learned of the news. There were no missing reports and no fatalities at this time.
