Since being released November 10, 2014, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk” has risen to the number 1 spot and shows no signs of slowing down.
A full flegded, combustible, groove workout with elastic bass and unbeatable, colorful spirit, “Uptown Funk” is heavily influenced by the “Minneapolis Sound”of the early 80s, pioneered by the incomparable Prince, Morris Day, and the Time. There are even elements of the James Brown, the Gap Band and Cameo in there.
With guest vocals by the uber popular Bruno Mars, “Uptown Funk” was featured as the lead single for Ronson’s fourth studio album, Uptown Special, and was penned;as well as, produced by both Ronson and Mars. The catchy, Funk blaster also featured additional production from Jeff Bhasker, and writing from Bhasker and Philip Lawrence.
The partnership among this “Fab Four” proved to be winning as “Uptown Funk” became another smash collaboration with Mars, Ronson, Lawrence, and Bhasker since Mars’ “Moonshine”, “Gorilla”, and the megahit “Locked Out of Heaven”, among others.
After its release, “Uptown Funk” became a commercial success, spending eleven weeks at number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, seven weeks at number one on the UK Singles Chart, and topped the charts in 27 other countries including France, Ireland and New Zealand. The single also went 5x platinum in the US, and 6x platinum in Australia and Canada.
The song also set a new record for the highest number of streams in one week worldwide, with 15 million streams, and in the US, with 4.8 million streams. This year,”Uptown Funk” won Ronson the Brit Award for British Single of the Year.
Directed by Mars and Cameron Duddy, the energetic video stars Mars, Ronson and the Hooligans walking, and dancing around a city in full funk oblivion, wearing brightly colored suits and chains. Ronson and Mars stated that it had been filmed in many cities where Mars was touring at the time, including Toronto, London, and Vancouver.
With a song so infectious, it kinda makes you wonder what the “Fab Four” will think of next.
