Ever since The Blair Witch Project made waves as one of the first major found footage films directors have used the medium to try and recreate the hype that surrounded the (snotty) walk in the forest that was Blair Witch. One of the films that managed to at least partially do that was Paranormal Activity and since the original film screened in 2007 at the Screamfest Film Festival and was released in the US in 2009. The film made 9.1 Million in its opening weekend, having cost $15, 000 to make. This made it the highest grossing film ever to play in less than 200 theatres.
Since then the film has prompted 5 sequels (Paranormal Activity 2 in 2010, Paranormal Activity 3 in 2011, Paranormal Activity 4 in 2012 and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones in 2014). Franchise producer Oren Peli returns this year with the 6th and final instalment, Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension. In this film previous Paranormal Activity co-producer, Gregory Plotkin takes the spot in the directors chairs and introduces the audience to a new family, The Fleeges, Dad Ryan (Chris J. Murray), Mom Emily (Brit Shaw) and daughter Leila (IvyGeorge) as they move into a new house. As they unpack and settle in they discover a box of tapes and a video camera that present he family with some startling supernatural discoveries and demonstrates that there is more to their new home than meets the human eye.
A new trailer for the film has recently appeared on the web and has already proved to cause a stir amongst fans of the franchise. With this being promoted as the final piece to the Paranormal Activity story the supernatural series is set to go out with a bang, or maybe a thump. In the night. Don’t be disheartened though horror fans, Oren Peli will continue to hold on to his horror name, and with his Insidious franchise continuing to produce films we can assume he won’t stop scaring viewers anytime soon.
You can watch the new trailer below, with the film being released in the US in October the 23rd.
