It’s been 10 years since Chaka Khan released her last single ‘One for All Time’ in 2008, taking from her last released studio album ‘Funk This’ in ’07. Since then, the ‘Queen of Funk’ did not put out any new material for about a decade. Last year, however, she lends her voice for ‘Say a Prayer’ in collaboration with British Dance producer TIEKS featuring Jamaican artist Popcaan. A fun anthemic dance-pop song with gospel influences, it opened up a new musical direction for Chaka Khan as it looks like she’s going back to that direction.
Her new Single titled ‘Like Sugar’ is in collab with former Major Lazer member Switch. The British DJ produced records for M.I.A., Christina Aguilera, Rihanna, and Beyoncé (‘Run the World (Girls)‘) and was, together with Diplo, a founding member of Major Lazer, but was not part of their 2015 hit song ‘Lean On‘, as he left in 2011.
Now, David Taylor aka Switch teamed up with the ten-time Grammy winner to present a new funky R&B and electronic track ‘Like Sugar’ – a fresh and modern twist while staying true to Chaka Khan’s signature sounds. The video, directed by Kim Gehrig, was released on Vevo on June 26th, 2018. A group of multinational dancers in colorful retro clothes show off their moves individually – with stylish vintage looks and perfect choreography. The street-style visual reminds of Run-DMC vs Jason Nevins’ ‘It’s Like That’ video from 1998.

‘Like Sugar’ is released as an EP on Spotify, iTunes, and all digital outlets – together with an extended cut and a Switch Remix. The song is the lead single from Chaka Khan’s 12th studio album, planned for a 2018 release. The album will be released on Switch’s new founded Diary Records. ‘Like Sugar’ is the label’s debut.
