The family of Korryn Gaines has been awarded $38 million in a wrongful death lawsuit. Gaines was the 23-year-old woman who was shot and killed by Baltimore Police in 2016
A special appeals court ruled in favor of the family on Wednesday, who’ve been in a years-long battle, fighting for her justice. A grand jury originally additionally bestowed the family the $38 million in 2018, but a year later, a Baltimore County Circuit Court judge upturned the decision. The most recent ruling overturned the judge’s order.
In 2016, Gaines was shot and killed by police officers in a six-hour standoff at her Randallstown apartment. Officials claimed she’d pointed a shotgun at officers attempting to serve an arrest warrant. Following Gaines’ death, her family sued the Baltimore County Police, noting excessive force was used when fatally killing her, and injuring her 5-year-old son.
